This is a dog sport for everyone. Dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages may compete. Unlike AKC the APDT welcomes mixed breed and handicapped dogs. There are also specially adjusted classes for the needs of puppies and veteran dogs. Handlers come in all ages and abilities. The special Jr Handler division encourages young handlers and many trials including the Wag It trials offer special Senior Handler's awards for handlers over 65. APDT also welcomes disabled handlers including those in motorized scooters.
The objective of Rally is "attitude over precision". Handlers follow a numbered course and cue their dogs for sits, downs, turns, stays, jumps and retrieves among other behaviors. Rally sets a different criteria for performance than traditional Obedience. Rally is more "real world" less formality. Unlike Obedience shows handlers encourage and praise their dogs throughout the run. They may even bring treats into the ring to be offered at specific times. Dogs should show joy. They often wag their tails throughout their entire competition. The atmosphere of a Rally trial is relaxed and supportive. A great day out for human and dog alike.
Trials typically include Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 courses. A team earns a Rally title after successfully completing three course runs with qualifying scores in any level. Teams may also earn Championship titles, National Ranking Awards and a special Award of Excellence.

AKC Rally Obedience is a bit different from APDT. AKC Rally is only open to pure bred, AKC registered dogs. APDT allows food rewards while AKC does not. APDT does not allow second commands but AKC does. The exercises are also a bit different. The basic phylosophy is the same and cross over training and competing is common. Check out the AKC site for more details
